Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are embarking on a new nonfiction project, but that doesn’t mean the production is without drama.

The Sussexes will star in a Netflix docuseries directed by Oscar-nominated documentarian Liz Garbus. Rumors about the status of the project abound , especially those that refer to a possible delay of the release date . While some say the couple is not happy with the way they have been portrayed, others are reporting that Meghan and Harry would like to retract some comments about the royal family following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Total, the media circus is about to rival that of Don’t Worry Darling .

This is all we know so far about the documentary series that both Netflix and the Sussexes have been pretty tight-lipped about:

What will it be about?

Speaking to The Cut earlier this summer, Meghan Markle denied that the project was a reality show . According to writer Allison P. Davis, the Duchess then pointed out “the difference between a historical documentary and a reality docuseries.”

As for what the show will show, Meghan said viewers can look forward to “the part of my life that I haven’t been able to share, that people haven’t been able to see: our love story.” At the moment, Netflix has already shared two exclusive photos of the couple that really offer a never-before-seen image of both. Natural, in love, in privacy…

Harry and Meghan, like we’ve never seen them before.

When will it be released on Netflix?

After much uncertainty, People reported on November 17 that the docuseries is coming to Netflix in December 2022 . (This time for real).

As reported by Deadline in October 2022, the series’ unofficial premiere date was initially set for December 2022 , right after the new season of Netflix’s The Crown . However, the platform would have postponed the documentary’s release date until 2023 due to the reaction that some of the topics covered in the fifth season of The Crown have aroused. Now it seems that everything is back on track.

This is the summary of events according to Deadline: On October 15, former British Prime Minister John Major criticized an episode in which Prince Charles (played by Dominic West) complained to Major (Jonny Lee Miller) about the time he was spending. He has had to wait to be king. Major claims that conversation never took place.

Although The Crown is based on true events, it is a fictional version of them and has never been positioned as non-fiction. That said, following the reactions, Netflix executives have reportedly been “nervous,” according to Deadline’s anonymous source. “They hesitated first and decided to postpone the documentary.”

However, another insider claimed in October that the Deadline story was false and that Netflix would continue to air the docuseries in December as scheduled. Now we know.

We’ll be waiting with bated breath until the exact date is revealed, but for now we can get even more excited with the teaser :

Meghan Markle does not seem very satisfied with the series

Rumors have been circulating for weeks that Meghan and Harry are not happy with the documentary. On October 4, Page Six reported that the Sussexes were demanding edits in the wake of Queen Elizabeth’s death in September . According to rumors, the couple wanted to retract some statements about Carlos and Camilla, now king and queen consort.

In an interview with Variety published on October 19, Markle hinted that the documentary is not quite what she envisioned. “It’s nice to be able to entrust our story to someone – an experienced director whose work I’ve admired for a long time – even if it means it’s not exactly the way we would have told it,” she said, referring to director Liz Garbus. “But otherwise we wouldn’t have done it that way. We’re entrusting our story to someone else and that means it’s going through his lens.”

When was it shot?

The Sussexes finalized a multi-year deal with Netflix in September 2020 for content focused on documentary projects, feature films, TV series and children’s shows, according to The New York Times. Since then, the cameras have followed them, which means the documentary will likely focus on their lives over the past two years , after their break with the royal family.

You can kiss intimately.

Who is the director?

The Meghan Markle and Prince Harry docuseries is directed by award-winning filmmaker Liz Garbus .

Garbus has directed documentaries such as the Oscar-nominated The Farm: Angola, USA , which followed the lives of inmates in a Louisiana prison. Garbus has also directed films about public figures, such as Marilyn Monroe (Love, Marilyn ), Nina Simone ( What Happened, Miss Simone? ) or the chess champion Bobby Fischer ( Bobby Fischer Against the World ).
