Hollywood celebrates a new edition of the SAG Awards , the awards given by the Screen Actors Guild, in recognition of the best performances in film and television.

Unlike last year, the 28th edition of the SAG Awards takes place in person, so celebrities wore their best outfits and walked the silver carpet with all the glamor that a night like this deserves.

With the Oscars just weeks away, fans and pundits alike are looking closely at the SAG Awards winners as a hint of what may happen on March 27. However, the results of the Screen Actors Guild were a surprise, both for those present and for the spectators.

Will Smith won Best Actor for King Richard , while Jessica Chastain won Best Actress for her role in The Eyes of Tammy Faye . Meanwhile, CODA was left with the statuette for Best Cast.CODA won the SAG Award for Best Ensemble.

The small screen also had its surprises. In the comedy category, the big favorite was Ted Lasso , the Apple TV + series, written by and starring Jason Sudeikis , who took home the award for Best Actor and Best Cast. While veteran Jean Smart won the Best Actress award for her performance in Hacks , the acclaimed HBO comedy.

On the drama side, the balance tipped in favor of The Squid Game , Netflix’s sweeping success took two awards for its leads: Lee Jung-Jae and Jung Ho-yeon. While the award for Best Ensemble went to the cast of Succession , the HBO drama. Actress Helen Mirren received the SAG Life Achievement Award for her acclaimed career in film, television and on stage.

Unsurprisingly, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine did not go unnoticed. During the acceptance speech of the cast of Succession, the protagonist Brian Cox took the microphone to thank the award and dedicate a few words about the current situation.

“What really distresses me is what is happening in Russia, my fellow actors, actresses and performers, writers and critics, are being told under penalty of high treason that they cannot say a word about Ukraine,” Cox said. “And I think that’s pretty horrible. And I think we should all be together”, he continued, dedicating words of admiration and respect to Ukrainian President  Volodimir Zelenzky , who before becoming president of his country worked as a comic actor.

“While tonight is a celebration, we all at the same time hold a place in our hearts for the people of Ukraine and send our thoughts, prayers and hopes for the impending peace,” said Leslie Odom Jr. after making the opening segment. along with his “Hamilton” bandmates Lin-Manuel Miranda and Daveed Diggs .
