It was supposed to arrive in 2015, but due to various technical problems, Avatar 2 has had to wait. And we are almost sure that the wait will have been worth it because, if Avatar was an incredible movie 10 years ago, we can’t even imagine what its second installment will be like after ten years in which technology has continued to advance.
Avatar was the highest-grossing movie in history until 2019, when Avengers: Endgame stole the position. Still, the James Cameron film became the favorite movie of many people around the world.
And it does not surprise us: the music, the colors, the light, the performances, the special effects… everything, or almost everything in Avatar , pointed to success.
It is true that ten years later we are surely much more difficult to impress, and it is also true that the current sociocultural context may have learned to be more critical of stories about colonialism in which one of the “colonials” ends up being the hero, very Pocahontas-like, we might say.
What will Avatar 2 be about?
The first thing we know about the plot of Avatar 2 is that as much time has passed in the movie as in the real world, that is, more than ten years. Our protagonists, Jake Sully and Neytiri have children and live happily on Pandora until… there is another attempted RDA mining operation.
The bad guys from the first movie will try to attack Pandora again and Jake, who already knows them, will take his family to a safe place on Pandora, a reef. Avatar 2 producer Jon Landau explained that both Jake and Neytiri will have to live in this new part of the planet that is already inhabited by a clan called Metkayina. That clan will make the family have to live with a totally different culture and nature than what they are used to.
The producer briefly explained that the main theme of Avatar 2 is a universal theme, that is, the theme of family. In this way, it seems that Avatar will once again touch the hearts of many people by dealing with a topic that affects almost everyone in one way or another.
When is Avatar 2 released?
There is less and less left: on December 16, 2022 , Avatar 2 opens in theaters .
On the other hand, the producer of the film confirmed that the plan for Avatar is to continue creating films. Three sequels are planned, one for December 20, 2024, another for December 18, 2026, and another for December 22, 2028.
So it looks like in the next few (even) years, December will be Avatar month . We’ll see if the production company can deliver on the exciting release schedule it has promised us.
Who acts in Avatar 2?
We are looking at blue dolls, but you will already know that behind each avatar there is actually a real actor who brings their gestures, expressions and movements to life.
After the success of Avatar , several videos in which we see how the film was recorded went viral. We see that the actors had to do a great job to imagine in their minds Pandora and the environment in which they interacted since in reality, there were only keys, chromas and spotlights.
The performances of the leads Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana were brilliant, so we are happy to see them again in Avatar 2 . We will see other actors and actresses like CCH Pounder, Cliff Curtis, Jamie Flatters, Trinity Bliss or Bailey Bass.
Regarding the production, James Cameron will be the director, as well as the screenwriter, accompanied by Josh Friedman in the script and by Jon Landau in the production.
The soundtrack of Avatar was one of the key points of the film, this time Simon Franglen will be in charge of the music for Avatar 2, while the director of photography will be Russell Carpenter.
All of them are great film professionals, however, in 2022 we have needed to see more women hold important positions in the production of the film.
