At the beginning of the 20th century , in a small Aragonese town , Manuela, an adolescent daughter of peasants, begins to work for the Prado de Sanchís family, one of the most important in the region.

As the days go by, Manuela will discover not only her idealized first love , but she will face a series of situations that will make her become aware of herself and her limitations, becoming the strong and determined woman who will tell her story for years to come. late, when a significant discovery stirs his feelings and makes him reminisce about his past .

Ángeles Gil , a lawyer by profession, has always had writing as her pending subject. That is why she began to study the novel cycle at the Ateneu Barcelonès Writing School, from which she obtained all the necessary resources to, for four years, give life and shape to what would be her first novel, “La casa del azúcar “ .

Under the Ediciones B label, Ángeles Gil makes its debut in the literary world with a story inspired by the life of her great-grandmother, a maid from the early 20th century who decides to take control of her life to escape the future that awaited her for belong to a humble family .

With a fluid, addictive and aesthetic prose, the author presents us with a narrative full of descriptions that take the reader to the environments typical of wine-growing regions and to a remote past in a very special way.

Located in two transcendental stages in the history of Spain; the beginning of the 20th century and the time prior to the Civil War , Ángeles makes use of time jumps in order to combine the plot so that the reader gradually discovers the ins and outs of the novel, in addition to giving it greater fluidity and interest. .

The setting is impeccable thanks to the descriptions that are careful not to clutter the novel with historical data, supplying it adequately to highlight certain moments and their influence on the characters.Narrated in the first person by Manuela herself, the reader will take a deep journey through the protagonist’s psyche, as well as her personal and professional evolution . Manuela is a character who begins as an immature, idealistic and innocent young woman, perhaps this aspect of her causes more rejection or makes her empathy impossible, since her decisions are completely illogical and very impulsive. However, as different events take place over the years, Manuela will become a strong, risky, mature woman and in a way ahead of her time.

In the same way, the author endows the rest of the characters with their own characteristics that refine their personalities, making them closer and more real, although due to the perspective they are less treated.

The novel stands out for the hard documentary work that is manifested in the setting, the traditions of the time , the social difference and the socio-political situation of Spain , mentioning for example the Rif War or the first skirmishes between the opposing sides that would start the Civil War . Such documentation reinforces the more realistic sense.

The action becomes more hectic reaching the third part of the story, since the first and second are more ambient and explanatory about Manuela’s youth. Despite this, reading does not become boring at any time, since Ángeles Gil manages to keep the reader’s attention throughout the novel through unexpected twists that energize the story.

We are grateful to the author for giving us a story in which romance goes to the background to focus much more on the story of overcoming our protagonist, a story that is undoubtedly a tribute to women.

The novel acquires, due to the aforementioned characteristics, a visual richness that makes it suitable for adaptation to the cinema or as a television series.

Without a doubt, “La casa del azúcar” is a lesson about life, the paths that open up, destiny, and the positive and negative circumstances that lead us to be who we are . A family saga , mature, well narrated and entertaining that delights any reader of historical books and female improvement.

Ángeles Gil has a distinguished and special pen that we hope will soon delight us with another memorable story.
