What makes a movie sexy? It is a question worth studying, and one that would most likely end up being answered with the evidence that everyone feels (sexually) attracted to a story according to their tastes.
Now, it is indisputable that these films radiate pheromones, some due to their explicit scenes and others due to the delicacy and subtlety used to represent the attraction between two people. The end of the ‘Fifty Shades’ saga led us to search our video library for movies that will put you much more in tune. The truth is that it has not been difficult.

Call me by your name (2017)
Without a doubt, the sexiest movie you’ll see in a long time. The delicacy with which Luca Guadagnino guides us through the paradisiacal north of Italy and the undeniable chemistry between Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet make this film an explosion of erotic sensations that teleport us to the magic of first love.

The Double Lover (2017)
François Ozon knows well how to handle eroticism on screen. Where in ‘Frantz’ it was all about subtleties, in this next film he embarks on a psychological thriller where identities, nightmares and sexual encounters are mixed. A woman, two twin men and a most erotic mystery.

The Maiden (2016)
Two women during the Japanese occupation of Korea star in this story of sex, mystery, and erotic tales. Directed by Park Chan-wook , it is a constant game of times, gazes and perspectives, which in between pays homage to the ability of stories to transmit sensations: in that magnificent scene in which Kim Min-hee “interprets” a sexual story in front of the sweat of a dozen men in suits.

Gaspar Noé is provocative. He demonstrated it with ‘Irreversible’, and he demonstrates it with this story with explicit (and real) sex that borders on pornography. Now, nothing simple: between the sheets of the sexual encounters of its protagonists is a reflection on love, relationships and -of course- sex.

The Life of Adele (2013)
Never before have we seen lesbian encounters on screen so explicit, so beautiful, so intense, as in this film by Abdellatif Kechiche. Winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, it relies on the undeniable chemistry between Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos, two torrents of pure sexuality in this exciting film.

Lars von Trier is another director who always wants a good session of explicit sex on screen. This was demonstrated in all its fullness with this film -premiered in two parts of two hours each- where we follow the story of a woman addicted to sex and the search for the different pleasures available to her. Provocative and revolutionary.

The Stranger by the Lake (2013)
On the shore of a lake, men of all classes, ages or conditions gather, who after sunbathing and taking a bath, go into the depths of the forest that surrounds them in search of sexual encounters with strangers. This wonderful film by Alain Guiraudie shows us how exciting (but dangerous) encounters of this type can be.

It is one of the films with the most explicit sex on this list, and perhaps that is why it was a real revolution when it was released. John Cameron Mitchell confirmed himself as a young film promise with this fun, sexual and youthful film about a woman’s exploration of her inability to have an orgasm.

If two is not enough for you, Bernardo Bertolucci gives you three. And they are not just any old thing: Eva Green, Michael Pit and Louis Garrel star in this story set in French May 1968, between Godard’s films and student riots, but above all immersed in the broadest sexual freedom.

As strange as it is ingenious, this film starring Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Spader takes us into the sadomasochistic adventures between a boss and his secretary. Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, there is no doubt that she knows how to combine a sense of humor, narrative excellence and the purest eroticism.

An adulterous relationship between a woman ( Diane Lane ) apparently happy with her wealthy life begins the conflict of this film by Adrian Lyne , well versed in the subject: he was also the director of the successful ‘Fatal Attraction’. Hence the extramarital affairs, passionate sex from ‘Nine and a Half Weeks’, and the result was his last film as a filmmaker.

And Your Mom Too (2001)
This sensual ‘road movie’ through Mexico has a luxury trio – Maribel Verdú , Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal – who overflows with passion and youth in each of the scenes. Before launching into space with ‘Gravity’, Alfonso Cuarón left us this jovial jewel of Mexican cinema.

Longing to Love (2000)
This is one of those movies that doesn’t need to make sex explicit to be tremendously erotic. The colors, the looks, the slow motion, the music, the cigarette smoke… Everything results in an explosive combination of inescapable sensations, which Wong Kar Wai represents in the growing and intense attraction between a man and a woman.

Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
Stanley Kubrick left us his film testament in this film starring Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise , and where sexual sects seem like the funniest thing in the world. Well more or less. The sexual encounters of the couple and the erotic pictures of the hedonistic club are a perfect combination.

YES SIR. Although there is a ship about to sink, the leading couple in this arch-famous film exudes eroticism from the first moment they meet on the deck of the ship. For sample, two buttons: when Kate Winslet appears totally naked to be drawn by Leonardo DiCaprio and when they both make love in a car.

Burning Ties (1996)
The Wachowski sisters became known in the movie world with this interesting film, where a professional thief and the wife of a mafia member decide to ally themselves to get rich. Although, since they are there, they take the opportunity to also ally themselves in bed.

Even if you see this shocked face of James Spader through the broken glass of a car, this David Cronenberg movie is really very sexy. But, well, it’s Cronenberg we’re talking about: the oddities of his protagonists, and his taste for scars and for having sex inside cars, will completely mark the story.

The Last Seduction (1994)
Linda Fiorentino , another erotic myth of the time thanks to her participation in various erotic thrillers. This is one of them, where she shines like never before in her ‘bad-ass’ role where she takes what she wants when she wants. And yes, sex is one of those things that she wants.

Ham, Ham (1992)
How curious it is to remember this film by Bigas Luna , where very young Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz shared an amazing physical attraction, now that they are a happily married couple in real life. And we won’t get tired of going back to it: Bardem with this shirtless pose and Cruz in the red dress without a bra are the pure image of eroticism.

The Lover (1992)
Based on the novel by Marguerite Duras , this film exudes magical eroticism. Jean-Jacques Annaud transports us to Vietnam in 1929 to show us the sexual encounters between a young French woman and a Chinese businessman. No matter the age, or the nationality, or the political context: just a torrent of sensuality between the two.

The penultimate film by French director Louis Malle portrays the passion between Juliette Binoche and Jeremy Irons , who have an affair behind her partner’s back. Danger, secrets and sex come together in a very intense drama, based on the novel by Josephine Hart .

Dirty Dancing (1987)
Come on, admit it: we’ve all drooled at some point over the sensual dances that take place in this eighties classic. Or with the scene in the bedroom, when Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Gray almost make love while dancing. It will be the music, it will be the summer heat, it will be Swayze’s pecs… This film oozes eroticism.

Who didn’t break out in a sweat with this erotic thriller from the eighties? A true classic in the genre, which confirmed Kathleen Turner as the muse of Hollywood eroticism. A story of mystery, death and sex, which takes place during a sweltering heat wave in the south of XXX.

The empire of the senses (1976)
An absolute classic of erotic cinema, where sexual encounters have no limits. Nagisa Oshima signs this tale of countless explicit scenes, and where an egg becomes the protagonist when it is used as a sex toy. What imagination these Japanese.
